The Benefits Of Cord/Rope
All-Natural
Cotton Rope is all-natural, which means that it is 100% cotton and contains no man-made materials. With a composition like this, it is great for dog toys and in-home items. Cotton is the safest material for dog toys because it isn’t harmful if consumed.
Eco-Friendly
100% cotton rope is completely biodegradable making it a great eco-friendly product. Even when your rope is ready to be retired, there is no need to feel guilty about disposing of you rope. Let bacteria and other living organisms take care of it!
Multiple colors
Available in several colors, cotton rope is available on West Coast Paracord in aqua, gold, lime, and hot pink to name a few. Because it is a 3-strand twisted rope, it can even be made of two or more different colors. For example, the color cookie monster has two brown strands and one light blue strand.
Multiple sizes
Cotton rope is available in a wide range of lengths and diameters. The smallest length option is 10 ft with the largest being 100 ft. Diameter options include 1 mm, 2 mm, 3 mm, 4 mm, 5 mm, 3/16 inch, 7/32 inch, 1/4 inch, 5/16 inch, 1/2 inch, 5/8 inch, 11/16 inch, 3/4 inch.
Manila – Manila rope should provide the bulk of the rope needed for your troop’s pioneering kit. (Its cost is mid-range.) Properly cared for it will give good service for quite a few years. Pure manila rope is by far the best all-around rope. It’s easy to handle, has good strength-to-size ratio, and does not have an objectionable stretch factor.
Sisal – Sisal rope has much the same appearance as manila rope, but it’s quite inferior in strength and does not handle well when used for lashing or knot tying.
Polypropylene – Rope made of this man-made plastic fiber should be considered for pioneering activities because it is lightweight and its strength-to-size ratio is good. Size for size it is twice as strong as manila rope, but has a little higher stretch factor.
Nylon – The most prevalent disadvantage of nylon rope is that it has a 20 percent stretch factor. But, in cases where the stretch factor can be taken up with adjustment to the strain on the line, its strength can be an advantage.

Parachute Cord – This popular cordage is very strong for its size, It’s abrasion and mildew resistant, easy to use, and available in different colors. But, it’s also designed to stretch.
Polyester – This man-made fiber rope is usually seen in the braided form. It handles well, is strong, and its stretch factor is less than nylon. It costs more than manila or nylon, but some sizes and lengths could be used in pioneering activities on a selected basis.
Polyethylene – This is the cheapest of man-made fiber ropes. It is most often seen in braided form and has a distinctive shine. Don’t let the low cost lure you into buying any quantity of polyethylene for pioneering or camp use.
Cotton – Cotton rope in both twisted and braided forms is outclassed in strength by other types and today there is little use for it in pioneering and camping.
Material of Cord/Rope
Polyester
Synthetic material that is UV-resistant, abrasion-resistant and maintains its strength when wet. Usually pre-stretched. Good choice for general purpose rope.
Nylon
Synthetic material that is both flexible and strong. UV-resistant and abrasion-resistant. Weakens in water
and does not float.
Kevlar
Extremely strong synthetic material that is resistant to fire, extreme temperatures, stretch, water and chemicals. Has low UV resistance, so it is often covered with polyester.
Sisal
A natural fiber used for making twine, paper, cloth, carpets and more.
Sustainable and biodegradable. Low water resistance and abrasion resistance. Prone to mildew.
Manila
A natural fiber that is very stretch-resistant and holds knots well. Sustainable and biodegradable. Like sisal, it has low water and abrasion resistance and can be prone to mildew.
Coir
A natural fiber made from coconut husks. Sustainable and biodegradable. Used in many gardening applications.
The process of manufacturing cordage and rope has evolved significantly from its traditional roots while maintaining the essential principles of rope-making. In the past, craftsmen produced rope by hand, stretching strands of material over hundreds of yards, anchoring one end to hooks, and twisting them together using a turning wheel—a labor-intensive process known as a "rope walk."
With the advent of modern technology, rope manufacturing has become highly mechanized. State-of-the-art rope-making machines have replaced manual methods, allowing for high-volume production, consistent quality, and greater precision in the braiding and twisting processes. These innovations not only improve efficiency but also expand the range of industrial and commercial applications for both braided and twisted rope.
There are two primary techniques for manufacturing rope—braiding and twisting. Although braided and twisted ropes may appear similar, their structural properties, strength characteristics, and applications differ based on their unique manufacturing processes.

Uses Of Cord/Rope
Bridge and Building Inspection
While remote devices equipped with video cameras are commonly used for inspecting bridges and buildings, in-person inspections by technicians often yield more precise information. High-quality ropes are employed to enable inspectors to traverse surfaces and high-altitude structures safely and efficiently.
Construction
Rope serves many purposes in the construction industry. One notable use is for specialized technicians who need to access difficult-to-reach areas on a project. Using ropes to lower workers into these locations is more cost-effective and time-efficient compared to building scaffolding, and it optimizes resource use.
Rescue Operations
Rope has been a crucial component of rescue operations for centuries, allowing rescuers to reach otherwise inaccessible areas. Its reliability is unmatched, as it does not conduct electricity and is resistant to damage from chemicals or water. This makes rope one of the most dependable tools in the rescue worker's toolkit.
Heavy Lifting
Though wire slings have become a very normal method for lifting heavy materials, it has been found that rope is just as reliable and a more economical solution to lifting operations. Rope slings have been engineered to be used with cranes, rigging, and other lifting mechanisms.
Mining
The mining industry has relied on wire for underground operations for many years, but this often led to issues such as rusting and the formation of fishhooks and kinks, which created unsafe conditions. Ropes and cordage have since become a safer and more durable alternative to wire. Modern engineering advancements in rope design enhance visibility, longevity, and overall reliability, making them a superior choice for mining applications.
Ocean Work
Ropes used for marine applications are specially treated to be pre-stretched, preventing elongation during use. Additionally, these ropes are designed to resist damage from fish bites, a common issue in ocean work. A major challenge in maritime environments is saltwater, which can cause significant wear and tear on materials. To combat this, marine ropes are infused with chemical treatments that enable them to endure the severe conditions of constant water exposure.
Military
Rope serves various functions in the military, from securing gear during troop movements to assisting soldiers in navigating challenging terrain. It can be employed for crossing rivers and overcoming other obstacles. Additionally, rope has long been a crucial element in endurance training exercises during basic training.
