Types of Bias Tape

Single Fold Bias Tape

On single fold bias tape, each edge is folded to the inside only once, so that the raw edges meet near the middle.

Double Fold Bias Binding Tape

Double Fold Bias Tape

With double fold bias tape, the tape is prepared the same way as single fold, then folded in half and pressed.

How is Bias Tape applied

Stitch & Flip

On double-fold bias tape, open out the pressed folds and place the narrowest portion right sides together with the edge to be bound. Stitch along the crease line, turn the bias over the edge and hand-stitch in place. This creates an application with no visible stitching. If there’s enough space on the underside to ensure catching the fold, you can also machine stitch in the ditch of the seam from the right side.

Encase

The easiest way to apply double-fold bias tape is to simply encase the raw edge to be finished and machine stitch the tape in place from the right side. Be sure that the wider portion is on the underside to ensure the stitching catches it. The stitching can be a simple straight stitch or a decorative stitch along the edge or over it.

Fuse

Some brands offer fusible bias tape, both double- and single-fold. To apply this, simply encase the edge and fuse according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Note that the fusing is a temporary hold, so stitching also needs to be done for security. Single-fold fusible bias tape is used for stained glass and Celtic appliqué techniques to cover raw edges.

uses for Bias Tape

Binding Edges - Bias tape is perfect for neatening the edges of all sorts of projects. It makes a neat and strong finish. The long and hard work of making a quilt is perfectly finished with bias tape. Decorative blinds, cushion covers, and other home décor items benefit from some self-made or store-bought bias tape to finish off edges.

Seam Finishes - Bulky seams or the seams that are visible inside jackets always look neater with a bound seam. The Hong Kong seam finish uses bias tape to finish off each side of the seam neatly.

Draw Strings and Ties - Bias tape makes good strings for something needing to be pulled together and tied. A stitched drawstring of self-made bias tape glides beautifully through a casing and ties at the front of a pair of drawstring trousers.

Button Hole Loops

Bias cut loops stitched together to make the loops for buttons fastened on a beautiful gown make an elegant finishing touch. Bridal gowns with this kind of feature look really stylish.

Decor and Trims

Use the bias cut tape to decorate cushions with diagonal stripes or a colorful trim. Mix and match different colors in the upholstery palette and turn cushions into a really interesting array of colors while neatening them at the same time.

Piping

Using self-made bias as a casing for piping cord or just as a way to trim the edges of a cushion is another way of incorporating bias tape into your sewing. Bias tape brings out the different textures and colors in the fabric.

FAQ

Q: What is the advantage of bias tape?

A: Bias tape is a great way to finish a seam and prevent fabric fraying and unravelling. It also creates a neat and couture looking finish on your garment. We like this video tutorial by Nicole Gulliver: An error occurred.

Q: What is the purpose of using a bias strip in bias facing?

A: Bias tape can be used to finish raw edges—like armholes and necklines—in a variety of ways. Using single fold bias tape helps you to create a discrete and professional finish that is not visible from the right side of the garment.

Q: What is the best width for bias tape?

A: Binding comes in all kinds of widths, but for binding an armhole or a neckline, I would suggest you will want to make it between 6mm and 15mm. If you're not sure, go and look at your ready-to-wear clothing, and measure the width of the binding that has been used, and make a decision based on that.

Q: Can you use bias tape as piping?

A: Making Piping
If you don't want to insert the cord or prefer the look of flat piping, you can simply press this bias tape in half and use it along all of your seams. I think a 1/8" exposed edge looks great with flat piping, but you can go a little wider.

Q: What's the best way to press bias tape?

A: Fold each long raw edge of your bias strip to meet in the center and press. You only need to fold and press the first inch or so of the strip. Then take a pin and place it through the ironing board's cover, over the top of your folded bias tape, and back through the cover of your ironing board.

Q: What is the stitch length for bias tape?

A: Sink the needle and pivot as needed to to help maintain an even seam allowance. Also sewing with a smaller stitch length, like 2-2.5, can help achieve a more accurate curve line. Turn your project over to the right side and bring the bias tape over and place the folded edge right over the previous stitch line.
